Bergen

Norway is a magical place.

There's supposed to be Seattle-like rain in Bergen, but we got lucky. We visited during a quiet time in the city, and I guess also for the whole of Norway. Businesses are typically closed between Christmas and New Years day, but that doesn't mean there wasn't anything to do.

The Norwegians are active people despite the short, cold arctic days. It feels like the roads in Bergen lead to the Fløyen train station. The city of Bergen sits in the shadow of Mount Fløyen. At 1400 feet above sea level, Fløyen remains snow covered during the winter while the rest of Bergen stays relatively snow free.

It's a neat contrast between the city and the looming mountain. Bergen bustles with tourism, and fishing while Fløyen is a retreat for the locals. There was a steady procession of cross-country skiers, snow-shoers, and families hauling kids with sleds to the top of the mountain.

Rather than taking the train though, we hiked up to the top. There were a few ice patches, but overall it was an easy hike. All told, it probably took 40 minutes, including frequent photo stops. Overlooking Bergen was gorgeous. I would love to return in the spring or summer.
